There are several ways to gauge how much water and energy are used when making block of ice. For instance, batch ice makers might run through a purge cycle every 12 hours, whereas continuous ice makers might occasionally stop producing ice blocks. The DOE's testing might exclude these pause cycles. The DOE is seeking input on the existence of additional purge cycles in these situations.


The devised device demonstrates a significant correlation between energy usage and environmental temperature. However, the amount of ice produced per cycle is not greatly impacted by the ambient temperature. When ice is being made and harvested, the refrigeration system's cooling and heating capacities are high, and its overall COP is high at 8.21.


The DOE points out that water hardness affects how cold water freezes, which raises energy consumption. Furthermore, it claims that water hardness can have an impact on how much energy is used in the field by increasing the amount of scale that forms on heat exchanger surfaces. The agency did not impose any requirements for measuring water hardness, but it did make a recommendation that these issues be resolved. The DOE is now taking feedback on the suggested rulemaking.


The DOE has requested feedback on how to interpret ASHRAE Standard 29-2015 section 7.1.1. It suggests that stability standards be met by all cycles used for capacity testing. The proposal also calls for extending the sample collection window in continuous ice makers from 15 minutes to 15 minutes + 9 seconds. With this change, manufacturers would have less testing work to do.
